  1. Show commercial- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t6bLugtJkQ
Purpose: The purpose of this commercial is to appeal to our emotions so the audience can see how a relationship with a Chevy can be just as meaningful as the relationship with a childhood pet. Which will make people want to purchase a Chevy.
Proving the thesis: The commercial uses a story of a women and her childhood pet to make us emotional. Many different aspects are used to make us feel an emotional connection to the video.
  • The actress's facial expressions are used to make the audience feel what she is feeling. As the commercial shows us major milestones the woman has experienced we see a variety emotion. When she is graduating and moving in to a new home we see how she is has a huge smile on her face showing her happiness. Then we see the first time she is learning to drive a car and we can tell she is nervous by watching her body language and facial expressions. Which may make some of us think about how nervous we were the first time we drove a car. The most prominent emotion we see is sadness. As she pets her sick dog the woman looks like she is about to break down and cry. This is an emotion we all can relate too.
  • The director uses music as a powerful aspect. The music that is played in the background is slow and quiet. Right when we hear that music we know it is going to be a sad commercial which makes us emotional right away.
  • Something that is changed a lot throughout the commercial is the setting. The reason for this is the director wants the audience to see the different time frames. Each life experience that they show us has a different setting. First, we see her as an adult in what looks like a vet's office with her dog. In another scene we see her in her high school bedroom with her dog. We also see her as a teen in a car learning to drive for the first time with her dog in the back seat. The last flashback they show us is her as a little girl picking out her puppy. The director wants us to realize that the commercial is reflecting on her childhood.
Effectiveness:
I think the commercial effectively makes the audience feel emotional as they watch a woman and her childhood pet grow up together, but I don’t this it effectively reaches its ultimate purpose which is selling Chevy cars.
  • The video reaches one of its goals by making the audience emotional. After watching the video, I read the comments and a lot of people say they didn’t realize it was a car commercial until they read the title of the video. All the comments focused on how sad the story of the woman and dog was. I found very few comments that talked about a Chevy.
  • Chevy doesn’t advertise their car much. They don’t share any information about the actual Chevy car which is usually what makes people interested in a car. The car is only pictured once in the end.
  • I think instead of making people want a car it made people want a dog. It showed people how loyal and loving a pet can be. And they didn’t incorporate how a Chevy can be a loyal companion. They say “A best friend for a life’s journey”, but they don’t connect the Chevy to that quote.
